What Does a Fire & Security Apprentice Do Day-to-Day?

A post by Skills for Security.

If you’re considering a career in the fire and security industry, you may be wondering what life as an apprentice actually looks like. A Fire & Security apprenticeship offers a hands-on route into the industry, allowing you to earn whilst you learn and gain valuable experience from day one.

No two days are exactly the same, but here’s a look at what a typical day could involve for a Fire & Security apprentice.

Starting the Day

A typical day often begins with a review of the work schedule and planned site visits. Apprentices usually work alongside experienced engineers, helping prepare equipment and tools before travelling to customer locations.

The role offers plenty of variety, with apprentices regularly visiting different customer sites and working on a range of fire and security systems. This hands-on experience helps build skills quickly and keeps every day interesting.

Installing Fire and Security Systems

A key part of the role involves helping to install a variety of systems designed to keep people and property safe.

This may include:

  • Fire alarm systems
  • Video surveillance systems
  • Intruder alarm systems
  • Access control systems

As an apprentice, you’ll learn how these systems work and gain practical experience assisting with installations under the supervision of experienced engineers.

Planned Preventative and Maintenance (PPM)

Fire and security systems require regular testing and maintenance to ensure they continue to operate correctly as per the customer’s needs and are compliant to British standards.

Apprentices often support engineers by:

  • Testing fire and security systems
  • Checking the functionality of all components
  • Inspecting wiring and connections
  • Identifying faults or potential future faults

This helps develop valuable troubleshooting skills whilst building an understanding of industry standards and best practices.

Apprenticeship Training and Development

Alongside on-the-job learning, apprentices attend regular face-to-face training sessions with Skills for Security as part of the Level 3 Fire, Emergency & Security Systems Technician apprenticeship. These sessions are designed to build the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed as a technician, as well as promote the professional behaviours required in their role.

Throughout the apprenticeship, learners develop an understanding of core electrical principles, system design, installation and maintenance, commissioning, fault diagnosis, health and safety, industry regulations, customer service, and the latest fire and security technologies. Apprentices also gain access to Skills On-Demand, providing additional technical training and industry insights to support their development.

Career Progression in Fire & Security

Completing a Fire & Security apprenticeship can open the door to a wide range of career opportunities.

Many apprentices progress into roles such as:

  • Fire & Security Engineer
  • Installation Engineer
  • Service Engineer
  • Commissioning Engineer
  • Technical Support Specialist
  • Systems Design Engineer
  • Service Manager
  • Installation Manager

With experience, there are also opportunities to move into supervisory, management, training, or specialist technical positions within the fire and security industry.
