The Security Event in Review
After three successful days at the NEC Birmingham last week, we left The Security Event 2026 with a renewed sense of purpose…
A post by Skills for Security.
At Skills for Security, we are proud to support apprentices as they develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to build successful careers in the Fire and Security industry.
One apprentice who has recently reached a significant milestone is Ben Clarke, who has successfully completed his apprenticeship and achieved his ECS Gold Card after more than two and a half years of hard work and dedication.
After spending several years working alongside his dad on commercial electrical installations, Ben developed an interest in fire alarm systems and wanted to learn more about the commissioning side of the industry.
After speaking to a friend already working in Fire and Security, Ben decided to take the next step and begin his apprenticeship journey.
After joining the apprenticeship, Ben quickly began developing his knowledge of fire alarm systems and gaining experience with technologies he wouldn’t normally encounter in his day-to-day role. The combination of classroom learning and practical experience helped him build both his technical skills and confidence.
From installations to fault finding, Ben has enjoyed seeing the impact of his work firsthand throughout his apprenticeship.
“The most rewarding aspect of my apprenticeship has been seeing projects through to completion and being able to take pride in the work I have carried out… There is a great sense of achievement in knowing that I have contributed to the final result and delivered a high-quality solution for the client.”
Like any apprenticeship, there have been challenges along the way.
One of Ben’s biggest challenges involved fault-finding on a large Gent fire alarm system consisting of 46 panels.
“The system had developed 184 faults across the network, creating a complex and demanding troubleshooting task.”
Working alongside experienced engineers, Ben helped investigate and resolve the faults, an experience that significantly developed his confidence and technical problem-solving skills.
Ben credits the team at Skills for Security for helping him develop both personally and professionally.
“The tutors at Skills for Security have played a major role in my development throughout the last two and a half years.”
“They have always been approachable, supportive, and willing to invest extra time to explain concepts in detail. Their guidance has made the apprenticeship process both enjoyable and rewarding.”
Ben also highlighted the support he received from his tutor, Chris Cabot.
“Chris has supported me on numerous occasions, helping me overcome challenges and develop new skills both in the classroom and in the workplace.”
When asked about his proudest achievement, Ben’s answer was clear.
“My proudest achievement has been successfully completing my apprenticeship and obtaining my ECS Gold Card.”
“This represents over two and a half years of hard work, dedication, and commitment to developing my skills and knowledge within the industry.”
Looking ahead, Ben feels his apprenticeship has given him the skills and confidence needed for a successful career in Fire and Security.
Ben’s story demonstrates how apprenticeships can provide the knowledge, hands-on experience, and industry support needed to build a successful career in the sector.
