Recently featured in Security Buyer magazine, Skills for Security’s Managing Director, David Scott, shared his thoughts on leadership, innovation, and the evolving landscape of the security industry. From his views on professional standards to what keeps him motivated, David gives an honest insight into his journey and what’s next for Skills for Security.
What does ‘security’ mean to you?
Security means ensuring people, systems and environments are protected through the consistent use of proven standards, supported by continuous research and development into new technologies. It is about combining what we know works with innovation, style and design to stay ahead of emerging risks and to build lasting resilience.
What is one thing you would change about the industry?
I’d make professional competence and recognition central to everything the industry does. Too many capable people are working without formal validation of their skills, and too many systems are designed without the right technical oversight. The industry should expect the same level of accountability and proven expertise that’s standard in other professions.
If you could be in any fictional world, where would it be and why?
Probably Tony Stark’s world. I’m drawn to the mix of curiosity, problem-solving and making a difference. It’s inspiring to imagine a place where innovation has a clear purpose and people are driven to improve the world.
Who is sitting at your dream dinner table?
Jake Wightman, Josh Kerr, and Keely Hodgkinson.
I’d love to hear how they manage the pressure to perform, stay disciplined and maintain confidence at the highest level. I believe there is so much in common between elite sport and leadership. Both demand consistency, self-reflection and a drive to keep improving, even when things are going well.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would remind my younger self that hard work, curiosity and resilience are just as important as any qualification. I would focus on learning practical life skills like managing money, communicating clearly and solving problems, because these are the capabilities that really make a difference in the long run.
What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?
I travel for work a lot, so I particularly value quiet weekends spent with my kids. I also dedicate time to training and running, which helps my mental health and resilience. On most Sunday evenings, I prepare for the week ahead so I can start Monday feeling focused and ready to give 110%.
What three traits define you?
Driven, resilient, and open to learn.
What three items would you take to a desert island and why?
My mobile phone to keep working, and running shoes and coffee. Both to me are non-negotiable!
What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?
I’m a world record holder in the M35 4x800m relay! This is something I’m very proud of.
What’s your approach to change? Do you like change?
Change has been a constant in my life, especially in my career. Embracing it has allowed me to explore new directions and opportunities. At Skills for Security, change has equally been a key factor in our success. We adapt to new markets, policies and challenges, and we are always looking for ways to grow and improve through innovation.
Do you have a creative outlet?
I wouldn’t describe myself as a traditional entrepreneur, but I do have an entrepreneurial mindset. I enjoy spotting opportunities, finding solutions and turning ideas into action. Creating initiatives for Skills for Security like Skills On-Demand and our sponsorship programme has been particularly rewarding.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I’ll still be at Skills for Security, growing in my role, still driven in finding ways to help build ourselves as a nationally recognised apprenticeship and commercial training provider in the electrotechnical sector. My focus will be on supporting over 3,000 learners at least, driving real social impact, and exploring new ways to innovate and resolve the skills shortage, whilst making a difference in our industry.
