About Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships offer a unique opportunity to learn while you earn, gaining hands-on experience and industry-recognised qualifications.

How does an apprenticeship work?

An apprenticeship is the perfect way to kickstart your career or change direction by learning on the job while earning a wage. You’ll work with an employer to gain real-world experience and attend Skills for Security training sessions to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to succeed. It’s a hands-on approach to building expertise in your chosen field, with ongoing support to help you grow and progress in your career.

Benefits of becoming an apprentice:

01. Earn while you learn

As an apprentice, you receive a wage while gaining valuable hands-on experience, which means you’re earning from day one.

02. Real-world experience

You’ll be learning within a productive job role, building specific skills that employers value. This real-world experience helps you stand out in the job market and equips you with the expertise needed for your career.

03. No student debt

Unlike university, where students often leave with significant debt, apprenticeships provide a debt-free path to career success. You’re receiving qualifications without the financial burden.

04. Career progression

Apprenticeships can open doors to long-term job opportunities with the employer you train with, and the skills you gain can also set you up for higher-level qualifications or promotions as your career grows.

Who pays for my training?

As an apprentice, you don’t need to worry about funding your own training. In the UK, the government funds most apprenticeship training, this may be topped up by your employer depending on the size of the business. Not only do you receive your training for free, but you’ll also be paid as an employee too!

Apprenticeship Roadmap

01. Build Core Skills

Every apprentice begins by building a strong foundation of essential industry knowledge. During this stage, you’ll complete key role-specific training and gain an understanding of workplace best practices. It’s also a time to develop your confidence and resilience, helping you grow into a respectful and responsible citizen who can contribute to society and engage in public life – preparing you for life in modern Britain.

02. Specialisation

As your confidence and abilities grow, you’ll dive deeper into role-specific skills. This is where you start applying your knowledge in real work environments, being given the opportunity to adopt more responsibility and demonstrate your abilities. Along the way you will develop and deepen your understanding of fundamental British values, you’ll understand that difference is a positive and not a negative and embrace equality of opportunity giving you the qualities you need to flourish in our society.

03. Qualification & Recognition

This stage is all about achieving your apprenticeship and showcasing the skills you’ve developed. Through an independent end-point assessment, you’ll demonstrate your knowledge and readiness to be deemed occupationally competent. It’s also a great time to reflect on your journey so far and start mapping out future career opportunities.

04. Career Progression

With your apprenticeship complete, you’ll have a range of exciting options ahead. Whether you step into an ongoing, permanent role, pursue higher-level qualifications, or explore options within your specialist subject area, this stage is all about going to the next level!
