A post by Gavin Wilson, Head of Sales at Skills for Security.
Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to build a skilled, loyal workforce whilst shaping talent to meet your business needs. From day one, you can develop practical skills and invest in people who grow with your organisation.
If you’re thinking about hiring a fire and security apprentice for the first time, we’re here to make the process straightforward. We guide you through each stage with clear support, practical advice, and a team that’s always on hand to answer your questions.
Understanding the Role & Programme
The first step is deciding whether you want to recruit a new apprentice or enrol someone already working within your business. From there, it’s about understanding the skills that they need to develop.
If you’re unsure which apprenticeship programme is right for your business, our team will talk you through the options and help you choose the course that best fits your operational needs. Our programmes include centre-based delivery through FESST (our practical, fire & security technician apprenticeship), as well as fully remote learning through Business360 (our operational-focused apprenticeships), giving you flexibility depending on how your business operates.
Apprenticeship Funding
Understanding funding is an important first step when taking on an apprentice. Most of the training costs are covered by government funding, and the level of contribution depends on the size of your business. We’ll explain exactly what you’re eligible for so you have a clear understanding of the financial side before you take the next step.
Recruitment & Support
Whether you already have a candidate in mind or you need help finding the right person, we support you throughout the recruitment process. Our complimentary service includes advertising the vacancy, screening applicants, shortlisting candidates, and helping coordinate interviews. If you already know who you want to enrol, we simply guide you through the onboarding process.
Starting The Apprenticeship
Once an apprentice has been selected or enrolled, we support you with onboarding, including paperwork, training plans, and employer responsibilities.
Apprenticeships combine on-the-job learning with structured training. FESST programmes are delivered in-centre, providing hands-on, practical learning, whilst Business360 is delivered fully remotely, allowing apprentices to learn alongside their day-to-day role without attending a training centre.
Ongoing Support
You won’t be on your own at any stage. Our Learning Engagement Officers stay in regular contact to ensure the apprenticeship is progressing smoothly. We’re always here to answer questions, provide advice, and help you and your apprentice get the most from the programme.
