Supporting Mental Health Every Step of the Way

World Mental Health Day – Friday 10th October 2025

Today marks World Mental Health Day, a global initiative led by the ‘WHO’ to raise awareness of mental health issues and encourage positive action to support wellbeing. This year’s theme, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”, highlights the importance of ensuring that mental health support remains accessible to everyone, particularly during times of uncertainty and crisis.

As the UK’s leading fire and security training provider, Skills for Security is committed to supporting not only the professional development of our apprentices but also their personal wellbeing. For many people, starting an apprenticeship is both exciting and challenging. Balancing education, work, and a personal life can be demanding, and ensuring learners have access to the right support is crucial.

Chelsea Norton-Stainfield recently said, “As both a Learner Engagement Officer and a Designated Deputy Safeguarding Lead at Skills for Security, I see first-hand how vital it is to ensure every apprentice feels supported – not only in their learning journey but also in their wider lives.”

Our Learner Engagement Officers (LEOs) and Safeguarding team play a key role in creating an environment where mental health and wellbeing can be openly discussed. They provide ongoing support to apprentices, offering a listening ear, signposting to specialist services, and helping learners build resilience and confidence. Whether someone is struggling with personal challenges, anxiety about their EPA, or wider life pressures, our team ensures no one feels unheard.

We know that apprentices in the fire and security sector often work in critical roles that can operate in high-pressure environments. That’s why we work closely with learners, employers, and support networks to create safe spaces for conversations, ensure early intervention where needed, and build a community where every learner feels valued and supported.

Throughout the year, Skills for Security delivers regular wellbeing check-ins, provides access to mental health first aiders, and connects learners with external mental health services where required. We also encourage employers to build supportive workplaces, recognising the important role they play in an apprentice’s day-to-day wellbeing.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re proud to shine a light on the work of our LEOs and Safeguarding team, and to reaffirm our commitment to supporting mental health.
