What Is Access Control?

An access control system manages who is allowed to enter a building or specific area. Instead of relying on traditional keys, users can gain access using credentials such as key cards, fobs, PIN codes or biometric information.

Permissions can also be set for individual users, allowing businesses to control which areas someone can access and when.

How Does It Work?

When someone presents their credential to a reader, the system checks whether they have permission to enter. If the credentials are valid, access is granted, usually by unlocking a door or gate. If not, access is denied.

Access control systems are used across a wide range of environments, including offices, schools, healthcare facilities, warehouses and commercial buildings.

They can also work alongside other security systems, such as video surveillance and intruder alarms, to create a more integrated approach to protecting a building, as well as integrating with fire alarm systems in the event of a fire.
