Course Overview

This specialist one-day course is designed specifically for Extra Low Voltage (ELV) technicians, including fire and security engineers who may not be qualified electricians but are required to work on or near Low Voltage (230V) supplies connected to the systems they install, maintain or service.

While ELV technicians primarily work with circuits operating at 50V or below, such as fire alarm circuits, security systems and PoE devices, the point of isolation may involve a fused connection unit, distribution board or other 230V supply. Technicians must therefore have the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out safe isolation correctly and minimise risk to themselves, others and the building’s electrical infrastructure.

The course covers the principles of safe isolation in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and relevant requirements of BS 7671:2018+A2:2022. It focuses on the practical skills required to safely isolate supplies associated with real-world ELV applications, including fire alarm systems, intruder alarms and emergency lighting.

Final Assessment

Delegates will complete a supervised practical assessment during the course, demonstrating the correct 10-step safe isolation procedure using GS38-compliant test equipment.

The assessment will confirm the delegate’s ability to select and use appropriate equipment, safely isolate the relevant supply, apply appropriate lock-off procedures, verify that the circuit is dead and safely re-energise the system following completion of work.
