Additional Learning Support

At the start of your journey, you will speak with our team where you can tell us about any barriers you feel you have to learning and any examples of support you’ve received in the past. As part of this step, we will ask you to complete a learning style questionnaire as well as an English and maths initial assessment to support any subject knowledge you may already have. These help us pin point an appropriate starting point and determine what additional support, if any, you may require. “This isn’t a test you pass or fail, it helps us support you properly.”

If you tell us about any possible support requirements, you’ll be invited to meet with one of our dedicated Learner Engagement Officers (LEOs). They will work with you to create an individual learning plan that identifies any barriers to learning, how you learn best, and what currently helps you succeed. If you feel uncomfortable with your employer being informed about any learning difficulties, you can discuss this with your LEO, and we can use discretion when requested. We’ll also explore the possibility for applying any wider reasonable adjustments, such as implementation of coping strategies and tools to help you succeed in line with your peers. This personalised plan ensures your needs and opinions are captured so we can provide the right teaching methods and support throughout your learning journey.

From the information we gather, our LSC’s will create an individualised plan to tailor your learning experience and ensure you receive the right help throughout your programme. You can speak to your coach at any time if you have worries, questions, or anxieties, there will always be someone available to support you. Your support plan will be regularly reviewed by your Learner Engagement Officer to make sure it remains up to date and that the support you receive continues to meet your needs. As part of the apprenticeship, you will take part in a formal progress review once each quarter with your employer and your Learner Engagement Officer (LEO). These reviews provide another inclusive and supportive space for you to talk about any additional help or adjustments you may need to continue progressing confidently. Feedback from your Learner Skills Coach (LSC) and employer will be shared openly, however details of any disclosed barriers will remain confidential and together you will agree on clear, SMART targets designed to help you achieve your milestones in a way that supports your individual needs and learning style.

We understand that there may be a need for additional support during assessments or examinations. A variety of reasonable adjustments can be put in place to ensure the process is fair, accessible, and reflective of your true ability. Examples may include but are not limited to extra time to complete tasks, having a reader to assist with reading questions, or a scribe to record your answers. Other adjustments can also be considered depending on your individual needs. These arrangements will already be outlined in your support plan, but they can be reviewed and updated at any time. Our aim is to remove barriers and give you every opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and skills with confidence.
